Union members are working-class heroes
Union members are working-class heroesMore than ever, unions are under attack. The far right has convinced many that union members are lazy, violent, uneducated, greedy and stooges of the Democratic Party. This attitude is shameful, because unions helped build our nation. Although far from perfect, and at times prone to corruption, the union movement has increased the standard of living for millions of Americans. They provide a stable, loyal workforce. Healthy friction between labor and management results in economic progress for both parties. To stand up and organize is inherent in the American psyche. Most important, unions give working men and women a sense of dignity. The Archie Bunker stereotype died years ago. See that clean-cut, 30-something union guy with the stressed-out look rushing around in his UPS brownie who looks like he roots for the Yankees? He’s working under strict standards. Everything he does is measured and timed. Discipline will result if he doesn’t do what’s expected. These standards have been in place for a quarter of a century. God bless this man, for he is the working-class hero of the new millennium.
