Leominster, MA –IBEW Local 96 signatory contractor Ostrow Electric Company, Inc. is nearing completion of the comprehensive electrical project associated with the new, 2MW cogeneration plant at the UMASS Memorial Leominster Hospital campus. The energy-efficient natural gas generator is designed to provide virtually all electrical power to the hospital and will run parallel to the electrical grid.
Ostrow’s complex electrical scope includes providing the cogen plant’s power wiring, as well as the installation of all electrical equipment, including the main switch gear, motor control center, panel boards, transformers, and UPS system. The NECA/Local 96 contractor’s electrical crew provided connections to all equipment, and control wiring for the CHP. The electrical team also installed interior and exterior lighting, a fire alarm system, and a lighting protection system, as well as the grounding of all equipment for the new 2,650 sq. ft. UMASS Leominster Hospital cogen plant facility.
Integral to the project was Ostrow’s installation of an all new 13.8kV infrastructure for the UMASS Leominster Hospital campus to support the new cogen plant, which will supply clean energy power to the main hospital, the medical office building and the Simons executive office building.
Ostrow Electric is currently working with utility company National Grid and Phasor Engineering Services in the project’s testing phase, supporting all gear and electrical equipment.
Ostrow Electric Project Manager David Esteves and General Foreman Peter Valinski have headed the electrical project team, managing a field crew ranging upwards of 10 skilled Local 96 electricians at peak construction. The contractor commenced work on the labor intensive project in fall 2016 and the new cogen plant is currently targeted to go online in mid-May.
Ostrow is serving as a subcontractor to the project’s general contractor, Harry Grodsky & Co., Inc., headquartered in Springfield, MA.
