Zap Electric and Local 96 Underway with Claremont Academy Lighting Retrofit Project

IBEW Local 96 signatory contractor, Zap Electric, based in Longmeadow, MA, is underway with the energy-efficient LED lighting retrofit project at Claremont Academy in Worcester. The City of Worcester was awarded one of 47 Green Communies Competitive Grants by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs to help fund the project. The project scope entails the replacement of interior fixtures with high-efficiency, intelligent LED lights. Motion detectors, daylight sensors and digital timers will also be installed into the lighting system to further reduce energy consumption. Twenty-nine First-year Apprentices Accepted into 2018 IBEW Local 96 / Worcester JATC Incoming Apprenticeship Class

Worcester, MA – IBEW Local 96 is pleased to announce that 29 first-year electrical apprentices have been accepted into the five-year Worcester Joint Apprenticeship Training Program (WJATP). On July 11, the apprentices attended an orientation at the Worcester union hall. WJATC Chairman Thomas Maloney and WJATC Training Director David Martinelli presented the apprentices an overview of the program, including the rules and regulations and curriculum requirements. The classroom portion of the electrical apprenticeship training begins September 4th at Worcester Technical High School. IBEW Local 96 at Full Employment

IBEW Local 96 Now at Full Employment IBEW Local 96 is currently at full employment as nearly 400 active electicians and VDV technicians are working on diverse projects throughout Central Massachusetts, including major solar projects in Shrewsbury and Hopkinton, as well as ongoing electrical projects at College of the Holy Cross, UMASS Medical Center, the Eversource 115kV utility project in Hudson, and at WPI’s Foise Innovation Studio and Residence Hall. The union is currently reviewing more than 80 applicants for the incoming Local 96 / JATC apprenticeship class.

Mass. Electric Construction, Local 96 Underway with 3.4MW Solar Farm for Town of Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury, MA – Mass. Electric Construction Company, headquartered in Waltham, MA, has been awarded and is underway with electrical construction of the 3.4MW ground-mount solar farm at the Shrewsbury, Massachusetts landfill for the Town of Shrewsbury. A crew of 35 IBEW Local 96 is providing installations for the large-scale solar project, which is comprised of an RBI ground-mount racking system designed to withstand 100mph wind speed and 55psf snow loading and 11,880 SunTech solar panels. Washington, D.C. – IBEW Local 96 Business Manager Thomas Maloney and Business Agent David Martinelli proudly represented the Worcester electrical union at the annual IBEW Construction and Maintenance Conference in Washington D.C., April 11 – 13, 2018. Maloney and Martinelli met with Massachusetts legislators, discussing issues important to the electrical construction industry in Central Massachusetts.

IBEW Local 96 Apprentices Volunteer in American Red Cross Worcester Fire Safety Initiative

IBEW Local 96 apprentice electricians proudly participated in the American Red Cross, Central Massachusetts Chapter’s annual Sound the Alarm Save A Life fire safety and prevention campaign on Saturday, April 6th. Through the efforts of Local 96 and 80 total volunteers, the American Red Cross made 72 Worcester homes safer by installing battery operated smoke alarms and CO2 detectors, and providing fire safety eduction to occupants of homes throughout, as well as providing fire safety education to its occupants.
